The Farm is located in Vimeiro´s villag, a place of one of the most famous battles of the Napoleonic Wars – the Vimeiro´s Battle. At the top of the property and already within the village is an allegorical monument to this important milestone in the history of Portugal and even the history of France and England.
The counties that surround the Farm, starting by the Torres Vedras County where it’s included, have many monuments, castles and heritage whose origins date back to antiquity and are lost in time.
For its importance, social repercussions, cultural and economic reasons the complex system of defensive lines of Torres Vedras highlights itself, which allowed to win the Napoleonic troops when the invasions occurred. Actually, it was on the beaches nearby (Porto Novo, Alcabrichel) that landed the British ships which have strengthened and helped the Portuguese troops in battles.
The Romans elected the fertile valleys of Torres Vedras to install themselves in numerous country houses and cultivate the vines. However the creation of the county comes from the reign of the 1st King of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques after the Christian reconquest. It was in this city that King John II met in 1413 with its Council to decide the conquest of the Ceuta city from the Moors.
The neighbouring counties of Lourinhã, Peniche, Bombarral, Cadaval, Obidos, Calda da Rainha, Rio Maior, Sobral de Monte Agraço and Arruda dos Vinhos, and even Sintra, are rich in Gourmet heritage, Monumental, Cultural, Historical, and Military Architectural. Archaeological sites. There are Arabs castles, churches and medieval monasteries, fortresses, palaces of the XVII and XVIII centuries.
It is among the valuable assets in Lourinhã that you can find the “Mother Church2,a XIVth century Gothic church. and also the Mercy Church, with its Manueline portal, the valuable findings of the Jurassic period, the cliffs in the area of the Palmogo fort, the nesting area with large numbers of eggs and egg shells fossils of dinosaur impregnated with traces of the Superior Jurassic.
The medieval town of Óbidos is one of Portugal turistic treasures that waits for a long and pleasant visit. The óbidos castle, with supposed Roman origin, was, in fact, in the Arabic domain that earned the status of fortification. The Óbidos Lake (ideal for water sports) and the Roman city of "Eburobrittium and an oratory dedicated to the patron saint of Grace are also visits that cant be missed.
Peniche is lost on the night of the times, bearing in mind it was an island in ancient times, without the sand tip that connects it to the mainland, so that escaped, in those times, to the Julius Caesar’s retaliation, a handful of brave Lusitanos that resisted and, took advantage of the inaccessible coast clipping, to found the town.
Here not to miss a visit to Fortaleza, that in the last century, served as a famous prison for political prisoners and the various churches and crafts and real rent – the jewel of the city. The Arab region occupation is well proven by numerous buildings that are excellent examples such as the Alenquer castles, Torres Vedras and óbidos. The Grace convents in Torres Vedras, the S. Francis in Alenquer and St. Anthony in Varatojo, where even today remains a Franciscan community and considerable number of churches and other buildings (Royal Palace of Serra d'El Rei, Touril de Atouguia da Baleia, and the Historic Center of Óbidos) demonstrate the richness of the region in medieval times.
This region also has a rich heritage of tiles and paint, largely coming from the XVII and XVIII centuries that decorate many churches and buildings. In the area of the painting is a significant supply with emphasis on artistic Josefa de Obidos, a six century painter whose works can be seen in the church of Santa Maria of Obidos and in Peniche.
